Marte – short for Martha (female) or Martin (male)

Martha (traditional, also) – Marthe, Marte (and these days) Marta – female, biblical name derived from Greek “Female Ruler, Teacher”, in Hebrew; marah means “bitter, saddened”, the Friesian spelling of the word is “Martje”, the Italians spell it “Marta”, the Swedes “Märta”, the Russians “Marfa”, the English “Maud” or “Mat”. In Aramaic it is “mart”. Short versions are Mara, Mari or Mat.
